Wipro to set up team of 3,000 for new IT business

Wipro is putting together a team of 3,000 people to develop a new line of business under advanced technologies.

BANGALORE: Wipro is putting together a team of 3,000 people to develop a new line of business under advanced technologies. This business will create solutions around cloud, mobility and analytics, and is headed by Shaji Farooq, the executive who moved to Wipro from Infosys last year.

The company will start reporting revenues of the advanced technologies business separately from the first quarter of the next fiscal.

One part of that business -- analytics and information management -- is already being reported as an independent business line with separate revenue mandate along with other streams including infrastructure, BPO, consulting and technology.

"We are putting teams in place now. By Q1 of FY14, it should have a size of 3,000. We already have around 1,000 people in the cloud and analytics businesses. Some of them will be aligned into the new team while some will come from outside," said Saurabh Govil, head of HR at Wipro. Wipro has reported a dip in employee utilization during Q3 at 64.8% as against 66.8% in the previous quarter.

"We have honoured all campus offers given out by us last year. This year again we have visited 100 top campuses and hiring is on schedule. Some 70% of our bench staff are freshers. We want to keep a talent pipeline ready by the time customers open up budgets and business returns. Our utilization will be better by the next quarter,'' Govil said.

The attrition rate has improved to14.2%, compared to 14.6% in the September quarter. "Deep employee engagement, clarity in roles and responsibility, transparency in HR processes coupled with lower hiring in the industry have contributed to low attrition," Govil said.

Wipro's IT business did a net hiring of 2,336 people during the quarter, taking the company's total headcount to 142,905.
