CHANDIGARH: Haryana is all set to upload names and details of convicted rapists on its government website.
"We are in the process of putting up names, addresses and crime details of around 2500 convicted rapists in the last 13 years in the state," state crime records bureau director Laik Ram Dabas said on Thursday.
The project deadline is January 10. Details of molesters and those convicted in sexual harassment cases, dowry deaths and domestic violence would also figure on the website of the bureau. Present status of cases and criminals like whether they are in jail or missing would also be mentioned. The bureau would ensure the identities of victims are hidden.
"Legally, there is no bar in publishing the details including photos on website and newspapers once a person is punished by the court," Dabas said. "After feedback from the public, we would also consider displaying photos of rapists and convicts in other cases related to crimes against women," he added.
According to rough estimates around 200 persons are convicted of rape annually in Haryana, he said. The bureau officials feel that the new initiative would help in creating awareness about criminals apart from crime prevention.
"The initiative would also lead to condemnation of rapists and will send a message to the masses to stay away from such crimes. It would be like the government agencies publish names of bank defaulters involved in non-payment of loans and electricity theft," said the director.
