Union Minister Vilas Rao Deshmukh passed away in Chennai on Tuesday
afternoon. He was brought to the city by air ambulance on August 6 on
ventilator support.
Hospital authorities had said Mr. Deshmukh was admitted for a
liver-related ailment to Global Hospitals and Health City in
Perumbakkam. Hospital authorities said earlier in the week that they
were considering a liver transplant, provided his condition improved.
A team of doctors of several specialities, including noted liver
transplant surgeon Dr. Mohamed Rela, have been attending on Mr.
Deshmukh.
Mr. Deshmukh, Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth
Sciences is a former two-term Chief Minister of Maharashtra and hails
from Lattur. He is currently a memeber of the Rajya Sabha.

Funeral at native village
Mr. Deshmukh will be cremated at his native Babhalgaon village in Latur district on Wednesday, family sources said.
The mortal remains of the departed leader will be brought to Latur on
Wednesday and kept at his house in Babhalgaon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for
people to pay their last respects, his brother Dilip Deshmukh, said.
The funeral procession will start at 3 p.m. and last rites would be performed at 4 p.m., he said.
Three-day state mourning
The Maharashtra government has announced a three-day state mourning from Tuesday over the demise of Mr. Deshmukh.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, official sources said.
