US Scientists Develop Camouflage Skin Paint

It has the capability to withstand temperatures of up to 600°C for 15 seconds.

Camouflage, Camouflage Skin Paint, DEET, University of Southern Mississippi, US Department Of DefenseSaturday, August 25, 2012 While watching a war movie, have you ever noticed a camouflage skin paint that soldiers apply on their face along with the camouflage suit to get inside enemy territory undetected? It comprises the traditional make-up ingredients such as oil and wax which can not only easily melt but also burn the skin when exposed to high temperatures. Taking cognizance of this issue, a team of researchers from the University of Southern Mississippi led by Robert Lochhead has developed a camouflage skin paint that can withstand intense heat.
With its capability to resist temperatures up to 600°C for up to 15 seconds, it can protect soldiers' faces during explosions.

The scientists used silicone in the new camouflage skin paint as it does not absorb extreme heat but reflects it.

As per the rules in the US, all camouflage face paints must contain DEET--an insect repellent which under normal conditions is extremely flammable. This is the reason why the scientists decided to mix it with a water-rich hydrogel substance to ensure that it does not catch fire.

What differentiates the new paint from other heat resistant paints is the fact that it is waterproof, non-irritating and easy to apply. It can also be used on fire-proof clothes, tents, and tanks. The scientists are now working on a colourless version of this face paint for firefighters.
