Google has rolled out its new 'free SMS' service from its free email
service Gmail. This service allows users to send messages to mobile
phones from the Gmail chat window.
Users just have to add mobile numbers of their contacts in the email
address. The SMS sent from Gmail chat are delivered to mobile phones
while replies from the mobile phone come into the chat window.
Currently the service has 50 SMS credits for each user, every sent
SMS costs one credit while a received message adds on 5 credits subject
to the maximum level being 50 SMS at any given time.
Google has rolled out the SMS service in partnership with all cellular operators in India now.
Google says,"If you'd like a higher message credit, you can always
send an SMS to your own phone, and then reply to that message multiple
times. Every time you send a reply message, your SMS credit is increased
by five.
Effectively, you're buying more messages by paying your phone
company for these outgoing messages".
Google does not charge for using the SMS service. However, standard
charges by cellular operators will apply to any SMS messages sent from a
mobile device to Google Chat.
If the credit balance becomes 0, Google says, "It will increase back up to one credit, 24 hours later. So, you won't ever be locked out of the system."
